A little field guide for a very big island ✳
A SEASON FOR EVERY KIND OF CURIOUS

When to visit Borneo

There isn’t one perfect month for the whole island. Start with the region and experience you care about, then check the local forecast and operator advice for your dates.

PLANNING NOTES CHECKEDAccess and conditions can change; confirm locally.

01 · PLAN AROUND THE DAY YOU WANT

What brings you here?

Pick an interest for a useful starting point. It’s a nudge for planning, not a weather guarantee.

FOR WILDLIFE DAYS

Give the forest a little time.

Plan more than one dawn or dusk around places such as the Kinabatangan. Rain and river levels can affect outings; ask your lodge or guide what conditions are like close to your visit.

✳ Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Choose a trip you’ll value for the place, guide and learning even if an animal stays hidden.

02 · CHECK THE CORNER YOU’RE VISITING

Weather changes by route.

Use local visitor information and a recent forecast for the actual park, island or town on your itinerary.

SABAH

West coast, east coast, highlands

Sea conditions, rainfall and mountain weather can differ even within Sabah. Check locally before island boats, summit plans or long road days.

SARAWAK

City, coast, cave and interior

Plan park access and boat transfers around current conditions. For Gunung Mulu or remote longhouse stays, confirm the connection and local arrangements early.

BRUNEI

Capital days and rainforest

Warm, humid weather is part of the trip. Ask your guide about river levels and the day’s plan before travelling to Temburong.

KALIMANTAN

River journeys and national parks

For boat-based wildlife trips, check current river and park conditions with a local operator. Build slack around travel to and from the river.

03 · PACK FOR TROPICAL WEATHER

Bring layers, not predictions.

Quick-drying clothes, a light rain layer and shoes with grip are useful across many Borneo routes. Add warmer layers for highland mornings, and carry sun protection for boat and island days.

Keep electronics and spare clothes in a dry bag on boats. Follow park rules and your guide’s advice about footwear, leeches, heat and trail conditions.

GOOD QUESTIONS

When should I go?

What is the best month to visit Borneo?

There is no single best month for every part of Borneo. Pick a region and activity, then compare local conditions and schedules for the exact dates you can travel.

Is Borneo rainy all year?

Borneo has a tropical climate and rain can occur throughout the year. The amount and timing vary by location, so use a local forecast rather than relying on one island-wide season label.

Can I see orangutans in the wild?

Wild orangutans live in parts of Borneo, but sightings are never guaranteed. Choose a responsible, guided experience and value the habitat and conservation work alongside any wildlife encounter.
