City time, coastal trails and remote rainforest all ask for a different pace. Use these field guides to connect the places without rushing the transfers.
Start with Kuching for the riverfront, culture and nearby nature. Bako adds a separate park-and-boat day; Gunung Mulu is a remote flight-and-forest stay. Treat them as distinct parts of Sarawak rather than trying to squeeze the whole state into one short loop.

Best time
There is no single best month for every Sarawak stop. Sarawak Tourism describes March–October as the drier period for Bako; Mulu’s rainforest weather can still affect flights and activities. Check each park’s current conditions and keep outdoor plans flexible. (Checked 2026-10-27.)
How to get there
Use Kuching for the city and southwest parks; Miri is a useful air hub for northern Sarawak. Mulu is a separate flight-and-stay block. Confirm the current flight schedule, park activities and accommodation transfer together before booking onward travel. (Checked 2026-10-27.)
Suggested days
Editorial starting point: allow 3–4 nights for Kuching with a Bako visit, then add at least 3 nights for a separate Mulu stay if caves or longer walks are a priority. Match the final length to current park activities and flights.

Choose one landscape, then add the next
For a first visit, make Kuching the anchor and decide whether Bako’s trails and coastline are worth a full day or an overnight. If caves and rainforest are the priority, give Mulu its own block: the park is remote, activities are guided and flights can be affected by weather.
The route notes below are planning shapes, not timetables. Check current park access, boat or flight arrangements, activity slots and return connections with the managing authority or operator before paying.

Connect the coast, caves and forest.
01CITY + COAST
Pair Kuching with a Bako park day.
Use Kuching as the base, then allow time for the road transfer, boat crossing and a trail that fits current conditions. Sarawak Tourism describes Bako as a day-trip option and recommends checking trail and boat information before setting out.
Plan flights, a place to stay and guided cave or forest activities as one connected visit. Build in a buffer before onward flights; the park’s visitor advice warns that rainforest weather can delay flights and cancel activities.
Semenggoh is a nature reserve visit, not a guaranteed wildlife encounter. Sarawak Forestry says the centre now focuses on studying orangutan biology and behaviour; check current visitor and session information before you go.
Use these regional visitor sources alongside the destination guides. Confirm the latest access, activity and transport details with the responsible authority or operator.
