Explore all placesBorneo covers four travel regions across Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia, and the distances between highlights are easy to underestimate. Start with the experience you care about, choose a region, then build around transfers rather than collecting far-apart pins. Our map links each stop to a practical guide; food notes surface local specialties and realistic meal planning. Use the route sketch to spread nights, and check each park, ferry, permit or operator source before you book. Wildlife is wild, travel is local, and the best plan leaves room to slow down.

THE DISTANCES
Borneo is a big island with three countries and long gaps between some of its best-known places. Choose one region or a connected cluster; keep transfer days roomy.
THE WILDLIFE
Wild animals set the terms of the encounter. Keep a respectful distance, never feed or touch them, and follow your guide and park rules even when the photo would be lovely.
THE PACKING
Pack light layers, quick-drying clothes, a rain shell, insect protection and shoes that can get wet. Forest trails and boat landings are more fun when you’re prepared.
THE PEOPLE
Ask before taking portraits, learn the local greeting, and choose community-led experiences where the host sets the boundaries and benefits from your visit.
Check current access, park guidance and visitor information with the destination teams.
No. Borneo is an island shared by the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesia’s Kalimantan region. Crossing between them means crossing an international border, so check the current entry rules for your passport and route.
Three to five nights makes a satisfying first visit to one area. A week gives you more breathing room or lets you connect nearby experiences. Crossing the island to collect highlights quickly usually means spending too much of the trip in transit.
No sighting is guaranteed, even in rich habitat. Choose a conservation-minded guide, follow park instructions and enjoy the forest on its own terms; tracks, birds, plants and quiet moments are part of the day too.
City wandering can stay spontaneous. Park stays, guided river journeys, mountain activities and limited-capacity experiences need more planning. Check official park and operator information before locking in transport or accommodation.
Confirm the departure point, luggage limits, weather or river conditions, border formalities and how much daylight the transfer needs. For remote areas, ask your local host how the last stretch works and leave a buffer for delays.
