Count the arrival and departure days inside your 7, 10 or 14 days. Put each flight, long road leg and lodge pickup on the calendar first, then count the usable days at each base. Choose one cluster for a week, compare depth with an extra transfer for ten days, and choose one extension for a fortnight.
What to skip: Skip the all-Sabah checklist in one week. Leave Danum Valley or Semporna for a separate stay unless you can name the days their entry and exit transfers consume. Remove a destination when it depends on a tight arrival, guaranteed wildlife or unconfirmed park access.
Connect the stops before you book.
Use these route shapes to understand how the regions fit together. The times below come from tourism authorities where published; transport schedules and availability still need checking for your dates.

Kota Kinabalu, Kinabalu Park and Kundasang
Use the seven-day western outline or give the same bases more time over ten days. Keep the journey inland and the return to Kota Kinabalu as separate calendar moves; use the place guides for park and city detail.
Sandakan, Sepilok and Kinabatangan
Choose this cluster for a wildlife-focused week. Use the Kota Kinabalu–Sandakan guide if joining it to the western route, and match your arrival to the river lodge's confirmed pickup.
Danum Valley through Lahad Datu
Replace a major block with Danum rather than treating it as an extra roadside stop. Sabah Tourism says access permission, accommodation and transport must be arranged in advance; the chosen provider must confirm how the stay fits your travel days.
Semporna and a confirmed island plan
Use day 10 for the added move to Semporna and day 13 for the boat and road exit toward Tawau. Read the island and Sipadan guides before choosing flights; permit allocation and boat arrangements need confirmation.
This is a planning guide, not a live timetable. Confirm the exact pickup, jetty, boat, road leg, border step and return connection with the local authority or your operator before you pay.
Start with the cluster that matches your trip
Choose Kota Kinabalu and the highlands for city food, a coastal day and non-climbing park walks. Choose Sandakan, Sepilok and Kinabatangan when conservation visits and river time are the main reason for travelling. Sabah Tourism lists airports in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau, as well as long-distance road transport; check the services operating on your dates before choosing entry and exit cities. Danum Valley and Semporna each add another access plan. Kota Kinabalu, Sepilok, Kinabatangan, Danum Valley and Semporna are separate travel commitments, not one compact circuit.
7 days: Kota Kinabalu and the highlands
This route suits first-time visitors who want city, coast and highland scenery without crossing Sabah. Day 1: arrive in Kota Kinabalu. Day 2: choose the city or an island outing. Day 3: reserve the road transfer to Kundasang or the Kinabalu Park area. Day 4: use the highland base for a non-climbing park visit. Day 5: return to Kota Kinabalu. Day 6: keep a flexible city or coastal day. Day 7: depart. The main road moves are days 3 and 5. A practical alternative is to stay in Kota Kinabalu and book one highland excursion, accepting less time there in exchange for fewer hotel changes. Confirm pickup, return arrangements and the actual boat jetty with your transport providers, and current trail access with Sabah Parks.
7 days: Sandakan, Sepilok and Kinabatangan
Choose this alternative week if wildlife and conservation matter more than city and mountain variety. Day 1: arrive in Sandakan and settle in town or Sepilok. Day 2: visit Sepilok. Day 3: transfer to your Kinabatangan stay. Days 4–5: leave room for the lodge's river programme. Day 6: return to Sandakan or Sepilok. Day 7: depart. Days 3 and 6 carry the main lodge transfers; arrival day also needs a local pickup. Sabah Tourism recommends at least three days at the river; this is planning guidance, not a required package or a promise of sightings. A practical alternative is to trade one river night for another Sepilok night when conservation visits are your priority. Confirm visiting arrangements with the centre and pickup points, boat periods and checkout with the lodge before buying flights.
10 days: deepen the west-coast or wildlife cluster
For a slower trip, use the extra days in the cluster you chose. A west-coast version is day 1 arrival; day 2 Kota Kinabalu; day 3 transfer inland; days 4–6 around Kundasang and Kinabalu Park; day 7 return to Kota Kinabalu; days 8–9 coast, city and flexibility; day 10 departure. Its road moves are days 3 and 7; the practical alternative is fewer highland nights and more city time. A wildlife version is day 1 Sandakan arrival; days 2–3 Sepilok and nearby interests; day 4 river transfer; days 5–7 Kinabatangan; day 8 return; day 9 a flexible Sandakan day; day 10 departure. Its lodge moves are days 4 and 8; swap an extra river day for town or Sepilok if that better fits your interests. Confirm park or centre access with the authority and each transfer with the provider. Both versions keep the extra days within one cluster.
10 days: combine the highlands and east-coast wildlife
This version suits travellers who value variety and accept more moving days. Day 1: arrive in Kota Kinabalu. Day 2: transfer to the highlands. Day 3: Kinabalu Park or Kundasang. Day 4: return to Kota Kinabalu. Day 5: reserve the entire day for Kota Kinabalu–Sandakan travel and the final local transfer. Day 6: Sepilok. Day 7: transfer to Kinabatangan. Day 8: river time. Day 9: return to Sandakan. Day 10: depart. Days 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9 all involve a change of base; days 7–9 give parts of three river days, not three full days of activities. The practical alternative is to drop the highlands and deepen the eastern stay. Check the airline or road operator's actual service and baggage terms, the centre's visit arrangements and the lodge's pickup window. If those do not align, remove a stop or add time.
14 days: add Semporna for islands or diving
For travellers who want a sea finish, keep days 1–9 of the combined route above, ending back in Sandakan. Day 10 is the full move to Semporna, using a road transfer or an air connection through Tawau only when the actual services and onward pickup fit. Days 11–12 are for confirmed island or dive plans. Day 13 is the boat and road exit toward Tawau, with a mainland overnight; day 14 is departure. The new leg consumes day 10 and the return consumes day 13, in addition to the earlier transfer days. Keep this version only if you can finish from Tawau; a required return to Kota Kinabalu needs its own connection and may reduce island time. A practical alternative is to omit the highlands and give the east coast and sea more room. Confirm the departure jetty, island access, weather arrangements and return boat with the operator. If Sipadan is the goal, verify permit allocation rather than assuming a Semporna booking includes it; divers should also confirm the required interval before their onward flight with their dive provider.
14 days: choose a Sarawak extension instead
This option suits travellers who prefer a second state's city and cultural interests to an island finish. Use days 1–9 of the combined Sabah route, then reserve day 10 for travel from Sandakan to a single Sarawak base, such as Kuching. Choose flights from the actual timetable; this outline does not assume a direct service. Days 11–13 can stay with that one base, and day 14 is departure from Sarawak. If connections require an overnight, day 11 also becomes travel time. The extension therefore consumes day 10, possibly day 11, and requires an exit that works from Sarawak. A practical alternative is to stay in Sabah for those days rather than add another flight sequence. Confirm every air connection, baggage arrangement and arrival requirement with the responsible airline and authority before booking. Do not add Semporna to this same outline; use the Borneo itinerary guide to compare a wider route.
Where does Danum Valley fit?
Danum suits travellers who want a dedicated forest stay and are willing to plan around its access. Sabah Tourism says permission, transport and accommodation must be arranged in advance, with access restricted to permitted vehicles. Use it as a replacement for a major block rather than an overnight detour. For example, an alternative ten-day eastern route is day 1 Sandakan arrival; days 2–3 Sepilok; day 4 move to Lahad Datu; day 5 the arranged Danum transfer; days 6–7 forest time; day 8 return to Lahad Datu; day 9 a buffer or confirmed onward connection; day 10 departure. This replaces Kinabatangan, and days 4, 5 and 8 are transfer commitments. If the operator's access days do not fit, keep the original river route. Confirm permission, meeting point, lodging, guide arrangements and the return transfer with the chosen accommodation or licensed operator; no particular package or pickup is assumed here.
Keep a park visit separate from a mountain climb
The highland days above describe a non-climbing visit. Sabah Tourism lists the botanical garden and nature trails among Kinabalu Park's options. A Mount Kinabalu climb needs its own confirmed dates, accommodation, permit and guide arrangements through the responsible providers; Sabah Parks publishes the climbing and hostel booking instructions. If climbing is your main purpose, rebuild the west-coast block around the booking and allow recovery and onward-travel time. A summit attempt cannot simply replace a short park walk, and access or reaching the summit should never be assumed.
Before you go
- Book around the arrival and departure cities that fit the route, checking current services before paying for accommodation.
- For travel without a car, arrange the final lodge or highland pickup before buying the intercity ticket; compare the separate Sabah without a car guide.
- Ask each provider for the exact pickup point, arrival cutoff, luggage terms and missed-transfer arrangement in writing.
- Keep the day before an important flight on the mainland or in the departure hub when the preceding leg depends on a boat or remote road.
- Compare total inclusions such as transfers, meals, permits and guiding rather than a headline room or tour price.
- Keep flexible time for rain, sea conditions and slower travel; extra days create flexibility, not guaranteed wildlife sightings.
Entry fees, permits, opening hours, routes and transport schedules can change. Confirm the detail that affects your booking with the linked park, authority or operator before paying.
Good questions to ask
Is 7 days enough for Sabah?
Yes, for one connected cluster. Choose Kota Kinabalu with Kundasang and Kinabalu Park for city, coast and highlands, or Sandakan with Sepilok and Kinabatangan for conservation and river time. Count arrival and departure within the week.
Should I visit both sides of Sabah in 10 days?
Only if the transfer fits and variety matters more than longer stays. Reserve day 5 of the combined outline for Kota Kinabalu–Sandakan travel. Staying in one cluster leaves more flexible time and fewer changes of base.
Can I fit Kinabatangan, Danum Valley and Semporna into two weeks?
Make a separate eastern route if those three are your priorities, and compare every confirmed lodge and sea transfer before booking. The fourteen-day combined highlands-and-wildlife outline here adds Semporna or Sarawak; it does not also add Danum Valley. Drop the west-coast block if you want to explore that eastern combination.
How many days should I allow for Kinabatangan?
Sabah Tourism recommends at least three days, checked 25 October 2026. Treat this as editorial travel guidance and compare the actual arrival, boat periods and departure. Parts of three calendar days do not equal three full river days, and sightings remain uncertain.
Does a Semporna stay guarantee a Sipadan visit?
No. Make a Sipadan-specific plan and confirm the permit allocation and access arrangements with the responsible operator and authority before committing to dates. Use the linked Sipadan permit guide for the questions to ask.
Can I add Sarawak without losing a Sabah day?
The extension uses travel time. In this fourteen-day outline, day 10 is reserved for the connection and day 11 also becomes travel time if an overnight is needed. Departing from Sarawak avoids having to allocate another return to Sabah.
