Kudat and the Tip of Borneo guide

Plan the north Sabah road trip to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, Kudat's beaches and Rungus community experiences.

The Tip of Borneo, or Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, sits on the Kudat Peninsula and is a proper road trip from Kota Kinabalu. Sabah Tourism describes the headland as about 215 kilometres, or roughly three and a half hours, from the city. The headland is the headline, but a night or two in Kudat makes the northern coast feel less like a long return drive.

A USEFUL ROUTE NOTE

Plan two nights in the north if you want to explore both the headland and a local cultural experience. One night is possible but leaves less flexibility. Book accommodation and any community visit ahead, and confirm the drive time and last daylight hours before setting out from Kota Kinabalu.

What to skip: Skip the northbound drive if you need to fly out of Kota Kinabalu the same day. A single-point itinerary may technically fit but becomes stressful when traffic, weather or road stops run long.

01

Make the journey the shape of the trip

A drive to the Tip of Borneo takes most of a travel day once you add stops, meals and traffic. Avoid driving the full route after a late flight. Leave early, check your vehicle and confirm the road route and fuel stops. Public transport and local rides may not reach every beach or homestay, so coordinate the final leg in advance.

02

Stay for a sunset and a morning

An overnight in the Kudat area gives you more than one chance to see the coast in good conditions. Clouds, rain and sea state change the view. Choose a place to stay based on transport and the experiences you want, such as beaches, a local meal or a cultural visit. Keep sunrise or sunset flexible rather than a hard appointment.

03

Meet Rungus culture through local hosts

Kudat is strongly associated with the Rungus community and traditional longhouse experiences. Visit through a host or organized community programme and follow their lead about photography, etiquette and what is appropriate to share. Buying locally made crafts directly from artisans helps keep the exchange grounded in the people whose culture you came to learn about.

04

Choose beaches for conditions, not photos

The peninsula has attractive beaches, but currents and swimming safety vary. Ask local hosts where swimming is appropriate on the day. Respect signs, private land and protected areas. Bring shade and water if visiting a remote shore, and do not assume there are shops or lifeguards nearby.

05

Add Kudat to the right itinerary

Kudat fits a northern Sabah loop with Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud better than an east-coast wildlife route. If your trip centres on Sandakan or Semporna, adding the Tip may create a long detour. Choose it when coastline and community experiences matter, and give the round-trip drive its own place in the schedule.

06

Make the stop work for your route

Give the north coast enough time to feel like a destination. A road day can absorb more energy than expected, so plan fuel and meal stops and avoid driving unfamiliar roads after dark. Confirm whether your accommodation can help with local rides to the headland and cultural visits. Rungus hosts are people, not a performance; ask how to participate respectfully, follow their photography rules and buy crafts directly when available. Leave beaches as you found them and check local advice before swimming.

07

A final planning note

The headland is the visual anchor, but the north peninsula is better understood as a region of beaches and communities. Set aside time to ask your host about the local route and any areas that are private or culturally significant. If travelling with a rental car, verify the insurance terms for your road and parking locations. Buy snacks and water before leaving town for a remote beach, and carry rubbish back with you.

08

Let the north coast set the pace

The headland, beaches and community experiences sit across a broad peninsula, so choose one area for each part of the day. Check local advice before swimming and stay clear of unstable cliff edges. On a clear evening, the sunset is a lovely bonus; clouds and rain can hide the horizon. If the view disappears, a meal or conversation with your host can still make the drive worthwhile.

✳

Before you go

  • Check fuel, road conditions and your car's insurance before leaving the city.
  • Ask permission before photographing people or homes.
  • Use local guidance for swimming spots and sea conditions.
