THE LABUAN ISLAND GUIDE

Give Labuan
its own island time.

A small island with a layered past, a lively waterfront and a marine park offshore. Choose a couple of stops and leave room for the crossing.

Labuan is a Malaysian Federal Territory off Sabah’s coast, not a fifth mainland Borneo region. Plan the arrival separately, then choose between a town-and-heritage day, the Tanjung Kubong landscape or a weather-dependent boat trip to Labuan Marine Park.

Best time
Plan outdoor and boat time around the current forecast and sea conditions rather than relying on a fixed seasonal promise. Ask the marine-park operator what is suitable for your dates, and keep a land-based alternative.
How to get there
Labuan can be reached by air or sea. Jesselton Point currently lists its direct Kota Kinabalu service as suspended; the listed alternative is via Menumbok. Confirm the complete road, ferry or flight route, terminals and ticket rules with the current operators.
Suggested days
Editorial starting point: allow 2 days for town and heritage plus one selected landscape or island outing. A third day gives room for both Tanjung Kubong and a confirmed marine-park trip, with a buffer around travel times.

A practical checklist for routes, transfers and the details to confirm before booking.

Choose one island day at a time

Start with your actual arrival point. Air and sea routes have different terminals and transfer needs; the direct Jesselton Point Labuan service is currently listed as suspended, so verify before travelling. If using Menumbok, count the road transfer and ferry as one journey and confirm the return as well.

On Labuan, group town and wartime heritage stops together, then give Tanjung Kubong its own half-day. Treat Labuan Marine Park as a separate day that depends on a confirmed boat and suitable sea conditions.
